Osteoporosis in Men

Osteoporosis is a common problem.  As a matter of fact, the World Health Organization has stated that osteoporosis is the most common disease in the Western Hemisphere.  This is a disease of the skeleton where bone breakdown is greater than the bone being built.

In 1990 30% of the 1.7 million hip fractures worldwide occurred in men.  By 2025 the total number of hip fractures in men will be similar to the current number reported by women.  The complications and death caused by hip fractures is 3 times higher in men than women.  The incidence of fractures in men is similar to that of women who are 5 to 7 years younger.  And it is fractures that are the critical factor—the ultimate goal is the prevention of fractures and their subsequent complications.

Osteoporosis in men has been an ignored health problem.  However, finally some progress has been made, but much more needs to be studied.  Information about effectiveness of drugs in spine fracture prevention is still limited.  Only two trials (as of October 2001) have been done in men, and no studies have been done regarding hip fracture and bisphospate or PTH.  There is no evidence that testosterone reduces fractures.  It is believed that testosterone increases BMD but the necessary randomized clinical trials have not been done.

Remember the rates of death and complication in men with hip fractures is 3 times higher than in women.  There is still a long way to go in the study of osteoporosis in men but at least finally some studies are being done.
So why has this problem been ignored for so long in men?  Although osteoporosis has long been viewed as a woman’s problem, five studies suggest that the prevalence of spine fractures is similar in men and in women.  Somewhere between 10-20% of people over 65 suffer from vertebral fractures.  Two small study groups of men revealed higher than expected levels of osteoporosis.  One involving 103 men from 51-95 found 20% osteoporotic.  Another study showed even higher incidence in forearm studies.

Come to the Men’s Health Day at the Doorway to Health for a Bone Density Screening.  This Bone Density is normally $150.00. For this day the cost will be just $60.00.  You will get a coupon to come back in 6 months for another Bone Density for the same cost of $60.00. Remember, Test Don’t Guess.

Implants and Missing Teeth

Are you tired of being unable to enjoy eating with your dentures?  Are you concerned that tooth loss and the facial bone that follows it gives your face the dished-in look and makes you feel older than you are?  Would you like to avoid having your teeth drilled down to a num to replace a missing tooth with a bridge?  Dental implants can help you with these concerns.  They are surprisingly comfortable.

When teeth are extracted this causes your bone to melt away.  This will also cause loose fitting dentures or spaces under bridgework.  When bone is lost this also causes deterioration in the facial structure.  Implants are made of titanium alloy and act as your tooth root; this prevents the bone from melting away.  Titanium alloy is the one metal that the immune system loves.  Implant placement is not a painful procedure just ask my treatment coordinator Tonya.  Implants can be used for single tooth replacement or they can be used to stabilize upper and lower dentures.  For more information on this you may contact Dr. Terry Bass at 405-848-7780.

Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar

Most people don’t know just how wonderful vinegar is. There are many proven health benefits!  Its cleansing properties are known to aid digestion by stimulating the flow of enzymes and saliva in the mouth.  Vinegar has been shown to reduce blood pressure and strengthen the heart muscle because it acts as a blood thinner and artery plaque remover, reducing the risk of strokes and heart attacks.  Vinegar also contains important potassium, which is vital in keeping the heart bloodstream healthy, and is necessary for keeping soft tissues flexible and resilient.  Vinegar can do everything from relieving arthritis pain to stopping headaches, balancing pH levels, easing sore throats and normalizing weight, blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.  Externally, it’s effective in helping with a range of skin and hair problems.  Used topically, it helps heal cuts, insect bites, sunburns, jock itch and diaper rash – or give yourself a vinegar facial for toning and clearing up acne and exfoliating dry dull skin.  Gently rub your skin with a soft cotton ball dipped in vinegar and watch your skin glow!  It’s also great for animals – use it as a soothing after–bath rinse for cats and dogs to eliminate dry, itching skin problems, and it is helpful in older animals for arthritis, just like people.  The high acidity and powerful enzymes in apple cider vinegar can also kill the bottle bacillus, a germ responsible for many scalp and hair conditions.  Try a rinse of apple cider vinegar after you wash your hair.  It gives hair incredible shine and bounce!

It’s so easy to incorporate vinegar into your daily diet.  When you wake up in the morning just make a delicious cocktail using distilled water, Bragg organic, raw, apple cider vinegar, and if you need a sweetener, use organic honey, 100% maple syrup, or black molasses to taste.  This delicious “Bragg Healthy Vinegar Cocktail” is designed to flush out wastes that are clogging the organs of elimination, the bowels, lungs, skin and kidneys.  Take it at least twice a day and you will start to see changes like increased energy, cleaner skin and decreased muscle and joint aches.

Make sure you use raw, organic vinegar, never dead, distilled vinegar because the natural enzymes, minerals, and nutrients are destroyed in the distilling process. Any vinegar that is clear and has no “Mother” (strand –like substance in the bottom of the bottle) has no nutritional value.  Natural raw vinegar should be pungent, with a rich brownish color and a visible “Mother”.  Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar is cold-pressed the old fashioned way in wood barrels, and made only from the finest organically grown apples.

Give your salad a zap.  Vinegar is a wonderful flavoring agent - that at a mere 2 calories per tablespoon – adds zest to salads.  One of the popular dressings is made by blending ½ cup apple cider vinegar, 2 tsp. raw honey, 1/3 cup olive oil, 1-2 minced garlic cloves and 1 tsp. fresh herbs, such as basil, tarragon, dill and oregano.

What Better Way to Lose Those Holiday Pounds    To naturally accelerate your weight loss and keep your energy and metabolism revved up - have a clear cocktail before each meal. Mix 2 tsp. of apple cider vinegar with 8 oz. distilled or purified water – 15 to 30 minutes before every meal.  It will help curb your appetite, reduce cravings and make it easier to stick with your weight-loss plan.

Get fit, get healthy, and enjoy a long, fulfilled, happy life!

Immunity Boosters

The immune system is your body’s main defense against infection.  It consists of a closely coordinated network of organs, including the tonsils, thymus and lymph nodes; specialized cells (together known as white blood cells), including B,T and NK (natural killer) cells; and chemicals, including antibodies and messenger substances called cytokines.  Together, the immune system attacks infectious micro-organisms (and help protect you against cancer).  If you want to avoid the upper respiratory miseries that lay so many people low, be sure to give your immune system the natural boosters it needs to keep viral and bacterial marauders at bay.

Echinacea   Activates macrophages, cells that destroy microbes, and appears to activate NK cells; has reduced duration of colds and provided relief in a number of studies.

Garlic  Enhances activity of NK cells and macrophages, in addition to stimulating release of various immune-system chemicals; also acts directly against bacteria, viruses and fungi.

Medical Mushrooms  Maitake is the source of D fraction, which stimulates macrophages; reishi also stimulates immune cells.

Olive Leaf  Contains powerful antiviral compounds (colds, and flu are caused by viruses) also fights fungi and bacteria.

Probiotics  Helps keep intestines healthy by preventing harmful microbes from attaching to the bowel wall; helps babies develop resistance to intestinal viruses.

Vitamins A, C & E  Vitamin A deficiency causes decreased infection resistance; vitamin C usage has reduced cold severity and duration; vitamin E helps improve immune response in older people.

Zinc  Deficiency reduces of T and B cells, and of immune-system chemicals; has reduced length of illness when used at the very first sign of cold.
