In keeping with our theme
of "Test Don't Guess," be careful what supplements you decide to take.
Just because something is good doesn't mean it is good for you! Let me
give you two very important examples.
Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF-1) There are several companies that make and promote colostrum products. The marketers claim colustrum benefits your immune system and list a whole host of potential benefits. They claim their individuals products are high in Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF-1), because their colustrum has not been defatted which ensures higher levels of IGF-1. Here is the research you need to know about.
IGF-1 promotes the transformation of normal
breast cells to breast cancers. Dr. Samuel Epstein has done extensive
research in this area. IGF-1 makes breast cancer more invasive and
therefore more deadly. IGF-1 enhances cancer's ability to spread to
distant organs. The prenatal and infant breast is particularly susceptible
to hormonal influences. This imprinting by IGF-1 may increase future
breast cancer risks and may increase the sensitivity of the breast to
mammography and the carcinogenic and estrogen-like effects of pesticide
residues in food.
Why take unneccessary risks? Colustrum contains IGF-1, in fact it is the high level of IGF-1 the manufacturers promote. Don't buy this potential health hazard--even if it is in a health food store! Human Growth Hormone The second example you need to consider--HGH or human growth hormone. HGH from deer and elk antler is hardly human growth hormone! That in itself is disturbing! Real HGH is from cadavers and is very expensive. The use of the genetically engineered human growth hormone for anti-aging medications has become a major industry. They claim HGH can stop or reverse the aging process, decrease body fat, and increase muscle mass and bone density. These people are "either ignorant of or suppress well-documented information on the grave cancer risks of HGH" according to Dr. Samuel Epstein with the International Cancer Prevention Coalition. HGH induces growth promoting effects by stimulating the liver to increase the production of the natural Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1 or IgF-1). Blood levels of this normally decrease with age. There are numerous publications in prestigious peer reviewed scientific journals showing elevated IGF-1 levels are strongly associated with major excess risks of colon, prostate, and breast cancer. Even minor elevations are associated with a 7-fold increase of breast cancer. In fact, the risk is almost as high as those women carrying genes BRCA-1 and BRCA-2. Think about that! In addition, IGF-1 inhibits the apoptosis of cancer cells, thus it stimulates the growth and invasiveness of small, undiagnosed cancers. It also increased the resistance of cancers to chemotherapy. The only time HGH should be used is by qualified endocrinologists for highly restricted medical disorders such as dwarfism due to pituitary gland deficiency. This by the way was approved by the FDA in 1985; anti-aging medication has never received such approval. Fortunately the HGH nutritional supplements including liquids and sprays are generally not absorbed. You spend money for very little benefit--in the case of HGH this is a plus because the possible side effects far outweigh any benefits. The best for your health--get to bed and sleep between the hours of 11:00 pm and 2:00 am. This is the time your body makes its own HGH. Make sure your body has the building blocks to make HGH, namely amino acids. Try Bragg Liquid Aminos. It tastes good and won't increase your risk of cancer. Make sure you and your family have a good "foundation" in every area of your life. Nutritionally speaking, a good absorpable vitamin and a separate absorbable mineral make such a foundation. While it is true that God in His wisdom placed both vitamins and minerals in our plant foods, He also put fiber in those same sources. Fiber slowls down the transit time allowing the body to absorb for assimilation all of those nutrients. When we purchase a vitamin and mineral compound together with everything but the kitchen sink in it, we will prove our doctors right. We will have expensive urine! Give your body a chance and your family a good nutritional foundation--Vitamin Perfect and Mineral Perfect. Remember, take them at least twenty minutes apart! Integrated Medicine Integrated Medicine--what a health concept. We are beginning to see this take shape right here in Oklahoma. The Full Circle Health Clinic has joined hands with Dr. Warren Blishen and we will soon announce another "main stream" doctor has joined our team. There has been an unhealthy chasm between allopathic (standard medical practice) and naturopathic. As we raise the standard in naturopathy by offering a clinical practice, we are setting the stage for cooperation between the two philosophies. Naturopathy is far more than a health food store and uses protocols without "snake oil." The proof is truly in the pudding and in the countless lives that have been changed for the better. The Full Circle Health Clinic has helped raise the standard and the expectation of what Naturopathy really is. You play the most crucial role in this transformation. Naturopathy requires that you be a partner in your quest for natural health. Without the aid of drugs, which simply overpower the individual, the patient becomes not simply a partner but an active partner in this quest. There will be daily choices that must be made, choices that add up to a lifestyle change. This lifestyle change will add up to a healthy life, but it entails more than swallowing a pill or supplement. You will be accountable for what you eat and drink, plus excercising, and rest. At the Full Circle Health Clinic we identify those things that interfere with your healthy lifestyle, but it is up to you to make the changes! We don't drug away the symptoms, but rather assist the body in removing the need for a symptom. If you are looking for health, you will find it at 753-9355. Educate Yourself Sunday evening at Braum's, Mark Hayes, Naturopathic Doctor at the Full Circle Health Clinic, helped a man who was choking on a piece of chicken fried steak. Mark immediately started the Heimlich maneuver and saved the man's life. Thank you Mark! He was so calm about this event and I was so proud of him. Mark said, "anyone would have done it," but I don't think so. How many people know how to perform the Heimlich? We all should. Do you? N.D.
