My Dental Insurance Covers This….

Over the years, Dr. Terry Bass has had many patients that have had questions regarding their dental benefits.  Understanding your dental benefits is not easy.  There are as many different dental plans as there are contracts.  Your employer has selected your plan and is ultimately responsible for how your contract is designed.

It is important to know that each contract will specify what types of procedures are considered for benefits.  Most benefits plans are only designed to cover a portion of the total cost.

Benefit plan booklets are often difficult to understand.  If any part of your plan is not clear, you should contact your Employee Benefits Coordinator of Human Resource department where you work.  Dr. Terry Bass and his Team are also available if you have any questions.  Please call us at (405) 848-7780, Tonya or Kay will be happy to assist you.

Anti-Inflammatory Diet

To supplement anti-inflammatory nutrients while continuing to ingest pro-inflammatory substances is counter-productive.  These dietary guidelines help reduce inflammatory for most people.

1.       Decrease or eliminate red meat and dairy products.  Some arthritis patients also seem to react to poultry.

2.       Decrease of eliminate refined sugar.

3.       Eliminate caffeine (including coffee, black tea, cola drinks and chocolate).

4.       Eliminate any food allergens during the initial three or four weeks such as gluten grains, citrus fruit, and night shade vegetables (tomatoes, white and red potatoes, red and green peppers, eggplant, paprika, and all forms of tobacco).  These foods can be added back into the diet one at a time (one new food every third day) while carefully observing the effect.  Forms are available to help you monitor these foods.

5.       Drink plenty of pure water.  Chlorine and fluoride are toxins.  Chlorine acts as an antibiotic and can diminish the friendly flora in our gut.  Chlorine has also been associated with some forms of cancer.

6.       Increase your consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables.  These should be raw, or lightly steamed. Good food choices include: apples, grapes, mangos, papaya, peaches, pears, prunes, kiwis and other sub-acid fruits.  If you are diabetic watch the glycemic content of the fruit and never drink fruit juices. Good vegetables include: asparagus, spinach, zucchini, parsley, artichoke, kelp and other sea vegetables, okra, snow peas, and many, many more.  Cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, as well as onions, garlic, chives, and peppers are very nutritious but may create digestive problems for some people.  The solutions is often simply chewing the food better and possibly adding digestive enzymes.  The Starr Walker LIFE from LIFE ENZYMES is an excellent source of these enzymes.

7.       For snacks, consider raw vegetables, whole fruit, nuts and seeds.  The fruits and vegetables contain lots of enzymes, bioflavonoids, and other phyto chemicals, while the RAW nuts and seeds are rich in essential fatty acids, especially flax seed, pumpkin seed, sunflower seed, walnuts and almonds.  Raw seeds like sesame and d flax need to be ground for proper digestion.  An electric coffee grinder works well.  These healthy snacks can be combines, for example raw vegetable sticks dipped in tahini (ground sesame) or almond butter.

These suggestions are very helpful for most people with inflammatory conditions such as sprains, strains, arthritis, etc. and can be used can be used with supplementation.  Most people find eating this was will lower blood lipids, smoothes out blood sugar problems, and helps with weight management, reduces digestive problems, increases energy and provides an overall sense of well being.  It is important to note that fats digest more slowly so when fats are reduced in the die, we may become hungry sooner and be tempted to snack on foods that are not good for us.  This is not a problem if we have plenty of the foods listed above, and have them already prepared.

Hand Washing 101

The importance of hygiene in stopping the spread of infection and disease.

The body’s immune system functions automatically – just like breathing and the heart beating.  We cannot control its responses; we can, however, do something that can prevent toxic overload on our immune systems, and that is where the idea of advanced hygiene comes in.

The human hands come into contact with a variety of surfaces and objects every day.  This includes touching others’ hands and then “sharing” what their hands have touched throughout the day! Washing hands is one of the best ways to prevent the buildup of germs and bacteria on the hands; however, not all of the germs and bacteria are washed away.  Germs “hitchhike” under and around the fingernails, where normal hand washing fails to reach, even when it is done thoroughly.

Here is an example of the auto-inoculation process:  someone is infected with a virus and coughs, filling the air airborne particles, and spreads those particles to a facial tissue and to their own hands.  Everything the infected person touches then becomes a host for the virus.  Another individual then touches the tissue, cell phone, door knob, telephone, or any other object the virus laden person has touched.  After touching the infected areas, the unsuspecting individual touches his or her own eyes or nose, and becomes auto-inoculated.  He or she has just introduced the virus to himself or herself by touching the portals of entry!

WHAT CAN BE DONE?

Use an effective advanced hygiene system that goes beyond normal hand-washing and face cleansing techniques to flush out germs and bacteria that collect under the fingertips, around the eyes, ears, mouth and in nasal passages where common cleansing techniques may not reach.

Make sure the ingredients used in the cleansing system are formulated with no artificial scents or coloring.

A semi solid tub of cleanser is best for getting under the fingernails (where most of the germs and bacteria reside) and for most direct application – as the fingers go deep into the cleanser to get under the nails.

Use an iodine-based facial solution that cleanses the entire face, as well as the mucous membranes around the eyes and the nasal passages.  This removes excessive germs and bacteria from those areas.

By lowering and removing the number of germs that are in these strategic places, the body’s immune system is freed up to devote its energy to managing other unhealthy conditions that may be present. So, cleanse where it counts!  Advanced hygiene is just as important to overall health as diet and exercise.

Bras, laundry detergent and your lymphatic system!
By Cathy Hopkins, Naturopath, MSAS certified practitioner.

Girls listen up, it’s time to make a change.

Here's what women who wear bras can do to lessen their risk to breast cancer:
A)
Reduce the time spent wearing a bra (if you insist to wear a bra). Put it on as late as possible before leaving the house and remove it as soon as you return.
B) Never wear a bra to bed. Sleeping braless gives your breasts a much-needed rest from constriction.
C) Avoid bras with underwires or other breast-shaping components. Also avoid push-up bras, which typically compress the breast.
D) Avoid strapless bras for more than occasional use. These bras are especially tight around the armpits and are more constricting.
E) Take care not to buy bras in too small a size. If the bra leaves red marks or grooves on your skin, it is too tight.
F) If you experience breast size fluctuations during your menstrual cycle, select different size bras for different times of the cycle.
G) Try to massage your breasts every day as soon as you remove your bra. This will help the Lymph system drain toxins from your breast.

TOXIC SKIN PATCH:
Note: One other aspect to consider - and it not a minor one at all - is the high probability that women who wear a bra (and synthetic underwear in general) continually wear a TOXIC SKIN PATCH! Now that is a daring statement and I’ll explain...
Most modern laundry detergents are still alkaline-based with fancy ingredient names such as washer protection agents, processing aids and brightening agents. Simply put, however, the main ingredients are salt, sand and acid.
The water softeners are aluminosilicates which are aluminum-based salts. Aluminum has been identified as a likely contributor to breast cancer! (watch those deodorants)
Frequently-found "processing aids" are sodium sulfates which are a salt derived from sulfuric acid - an effective drain cleaner. That is why washer protection agents such as sodium silicate are included because it protects your machine’s porcelain and metal from being eaten up by the "processing acids".
Now, imagine what is happening to your clothes. Rinse water cannot be 100% effective in removing these toxic ingredients because some of them - such as fabric brightening agents - are formulated so that they can’t be rinsed out! Since your clothes are in direct contact with your skin, whatever they contain can be transferred into your body through the skin and that is why clothes become a big, toxic dermal patch throughout your entire life!
What can one do about this? The first step would be to either change to a different, less toxic, laundry detergent or to eliminate detergents and shampoos entirely and wash with Borax. You simply buy Borax (very inexpensive) at your local grocery store or super market and dissolve 3 table spoons in a pint of hot water. Tighten the lid on the container and swish the water around for a minute or so. Most of the Borax will dissolve in the water until a saturated solution is created. The surplus Borax settles to bottom of the container. When your supply of Borax solution runs low, just add some hot water, allows the Borax to dissolve or add a little more when there is no more at the bottom. This substitute shampoo is fantastic, rinses well, leaves your hair soft and manageable without conditioners and is entirely non-toxic. Your clothes will be equally soft and clean at a fraction of the cost of laundry products and without the toxic danger.
Dr. Hulda Clarke’s insistence that solvents allow parasites to proliferate in the human body get support from the following article:
Fabric softeners contain numerous chemicals, many with serious side-effects: alpha-terpineol causes central nervous system (CNS) disorders; benzyl acetate has been linked to pancreatic cancer; benzyl alcohol [derived from Toluene] and camphor associated with CNS disorders; chloroform is neurotoxic and carcinogenic and is on EPA’s hazardous waste list.

The Lymph system is the body’s cellular waste removal system. Keep it flowing.
One potent way to stimulate the Lymphatic system and to ensure that its circulation is adequate is to do the following:
a) Every day, do 1/2 to 3/4 of an hour of brisk walking where you energetically swing your arms back and forth, practice deep breathing and come back home somewhat out of breath and thoroughly warmed up. This is necessary because the lymphatic system has no ‘pump’ like the heart is for the circulatory system and therefore the lymphatic fluid must move by sheer stimulating reflexes.
b) Another way is to mentally divide your body into two parts with the belly button being the dividing line.
             1) On the upper half of your body, including the arms, you brush your dry skin energetically with a soft natural bristle broad brush (check with a health food store - they often carry brushes with a convenient long handle as bath brushes) in a long stroke that always ends at a location close to your collar bone. Do the left half of your upper body towards the left collar bone and the right half towards the right one. Encircle each breast, stroke the breast tissue gently but firmly - always towards the respective collar bone. This is the general area where the lymph fluid re-enters the blood circulation for ultimate filtering by the kidneys and eventual recycling.
             2) On the lower body, including the legs, you would brush your dry skin with long strokes towards the inguinal lymph nodes in each groin i.e. where each leg joins the main trunk towards the front lower part of your abdomen. This is where the largest and most important lymph nodes are located and where a large part of the lymph toxins are ‘digested’ and conditioned. This action will stimulate to a great extent the efficient flow of the lymph fluid and therefore ensure an effective waste removal action.

Minerals to the Rescue

Minerals play an important role in PH Balance.

There are five critical minerals that must be present in order for body fluids to maintain a healthy pH (acid/alkaline balance).

These include:

·        Calcium

·        Magnesium

·        Sodium

·        Potassium

·        Manganese

Calcium: Known for its vital role in building and maintaining strong bones and teeth. Acts as a balancer to maintain proper levels of acids in the body.

Assists in maintaining the blood in an alkaline state.

Magnesium: Considered the “other end” of the balancing scale from calcium; magnesium makes possible the efficient absorption of calcium.

Our bones contain approximately 70 percent magnesium.

Facilitates neutralization of pH.

Plays a major role in activation of amino acids.

Helps metabolize glucose (blood sugars).

Oxidizes fatty acids.

Activates amino acids.

Responsible for over 300 chemical reactions within the body.

Essential for proper function of the heart, nervous system and muscles.

Sodium and Potassium: Essential to maintain healthy acid/alkaline balance.

Sodium resides manly “outside” the cells.

Potassium resides mainly “inside” the cells.

They maintain water balance between cells and body fluids.

Responsible for conduction of electrical impulses, referred to as “electrolytes”.

Manganese: Assists in metabolizing fats.

Builds bone and DNA.

Facilitates disposal of excess acids through the kidneys.

Since minerals are primarily stored in the body’s bone and muscle tissue, the absorbed bone and muscle tissue, the absorbed minerals must be carried by the blood to the cells and then absorbed by the cell membrane in order to be utilized.  Electrolytes make up the electrically charged ions that help regulate water balance, acid/alkaline balance, osmotic pressure, nerve impulse conduction, and muscle contraction.  It’s important that when supplementing with minerals/electrolytes, we consume a product that is bioavailable, meaning it is utilized by the body with ease, especially in conditions of acidosis.  This supplement must be capable of creating an alkaline environment, in order to bring pH back into a healthy balance.

Vitamin “C” Opens Arteries

A report published by the American Heart Association describes a study of the effects of vitamin C and blood vessel function.  Researchers used ultrasound to examine the ability of the brachial artery to open, allowing a higher volume of blood to pass.  In patients with coronary artery disease, this artery dilation was a very sluggish two percent.  However, two hours after administration of 2,000 mg of generic vitamin C, the vessels opened up an average of nearly 10 percent, very close to the amount seen in persons with no history of cardiovascular disease.  The researchers hypothesize that further studies will show similar effects on cardiac vasculature.

Are You Vitamin “D” Deficient?

Doctors warn that “psychiatric manifestations may be the first symptoms of vitamin b12 deficiency”.  They recommend that all patients with psychoses caused by brain-tissue dysfunction be checked for B12 deficiency. “Even though most doctors are aware that B12 deficiency can lead to psychiatric symptoms, they may not be aware that it can happen before any signs of anemia”, says Lorrin Koran, M.D., associate professor of psychiatry at Stanford University Medical Center.  “So upon finding normal red blood cells, a doctor may be likely to dismiss the possibility of B12 deficiency prematurely”, adds Dr. Goggans.

Elderly Are Suspect  How does a doctor know when to check further? “Severe mental disorders usually begin when people are in their twenties”, explains Dr. Goggans, who is director of the neuropsychiatric evaluation unit at the Psychiatric Institute of Fort Worth.  “So when an older person comes into the hospital with mental problems and has no prior history of mental disorder, I’m sure to screen for B12 deficiency.”

Other more common psychiatric problems can be caused by B12 deficiency, too.  Depression and dementia in the elderly are the two syndromes most classically associated with B12 deficiency.  Dementia closely resembles senility, with its loss of intellectual function.  But when it is caused by B12 deficiency, it’s reversible.  Unfortunately, many elderly people may be written off as senile when their condition is actually treatable.

“Biochemical depression is also very common in the elderly, adds Dr. Goggans.  “It causes sleep and appetite disturbances, lack of energy and intellectual decline.  But it is also easily treatable by standard antidepressants and is exceptionally responsive to B12 replacement therapy.”

“We’re careful to check for B12 deficiency in older people”, says Todd Estroff, M.D., assistant director of neuropsychiatric evaluation at Fair Oaks Hospital in Summit, N. J.  “They’re especially susceptible because they don’t eat well.  The older person with poor teeth who tries to survive on tea and toast is more likely to develop a deficiency.”

But the elderly aren’t the only ones at risk.  “I’ve seen teenagers with B12 levels so low you wonder how they can be walking,” says Charles Tkacz, M.D. medical director of North Nassau Mental Health Center in Manhasset, New York.  “It’s amazing they didn’t need to be carried in on a stretcher.  They’re getting into trouble because of a junk-food/fast-food diet.”

Other factors can upset the precarious balance of this vitally important substance, too.  Cholesterol lowering medications, potassium replacement agents and anticonvulsants can all interfere with B12 absorption.  And studies have shown that anti-ulcer drugs can have the same effect, because they reduce stomach acidity, which is important for B12 absorption.

Dietary Sources:  Of all foods, beef liver packs the biggest B12 wallop, but it is also found in other meats, fish, dairy products and eggs.  Because B12 is found almost exclusively in foods of animal origin, anyone who avoids those foods runs the risk of developing a deficiency.  That’s why strict vegetarians who eat no eggs or dairy products can become deficient if they’re not careful.  But even those of us who aren’t vegetarians should make extra sure to get enough B12.

Ubiquinone – Coenzyme Q 10

Ubiquinone means everywhere, abundant and describes what we call CoQ10.

Not a mineral, vitamin, or amino acid, but a precursor enzyme and this all important nutrient are all too often in short supply.

CoQ10 enhances our energy supply, improves our immune system, helps treat heart disease, cancer, hypertension, obesity, diabetes and even periodontal disease.  Our food contains only a small amount, what our bodies manufacture of it is often inadequate, so supplementation is highly recommended.

Your heart works 24-7 and has a very high demand for energy.  In 1990 there were some fifty different studies around the world attesting to CoQ10’s ability to improve cardiomyopathy, arrhythmia, coronary, artery disease, congestion heart failure, mitral valve prolapse and hypertension.  Three separate studies showed that CoQ10 given to several thousand people, caused more than 75% to have improvements in edema, pulmonary function and heart palpitations and with no side effects!

Cardiomyopathy is a mixture of conditions impairing your heart muscle.  Cardiomyopathy is often the most life threatening of all heart conditions.  It is most likely the number one reason people are ion heart transplant lists.  Many practitioners are beginning to say cardiomyopathy is actually a CoQ10 deficiency.

Remember, drugs simply mask symptoms, always look for ways to solve the underlying condition.  When you consider that your heart uses twice as much CoQ10 as any other tissue or organ and consider the fact that people with heart disease have some 25% less CoQ10 as healthy people, I think you’ll see how important taking CoQ10 really is.

CoQ10 helps with diabetes.  A daily dose of just 100 mg can reduce blood sugar levels in about 6 months time.  Hypertension is a major risk for heart disease and CoQ10 has proven effective in lowering high blood pressure.  Obesity is a well known risk factor for disease.  CoQ10 actually aids the body in burning fat for fuel. If you are deficient in CoQ10, 100mg will help you burn that fat!

CoQ10 – Ubiquinone is everywhere, make sure it is plentiful in your body!

What Is The Vertebral Subluxation?

The vertebral subluxation is the term applied to a vertebra which has lost its normal position and/or
motion in relation to neighboring vertebrae. Vertebrae which do not function properly within the spinal
framework generate mechanical stress. This accelerates the wear and tear on the surrounding spinal muscles, ligaments, discs, joint and other spinal tissues. Pain, palpatory tenderness, inflammation, decreased spinal mobility, and muscle spasm and hypertonicity will eventually follow.

Additionally, because of the direct mechanical and physiological relationship between the spinal column
and the spinal nerve roots, vertebral subluxations as well as other spinal abnormalities have the potential to impair proper nerve functioning. Once nerve functioning is compromised, communication within the body becomes less effective jeopardizing the overall health and wellness of the individual.

What Is The Subluxation Complex?

Through extensive research and study chiropractors have identified 5 components of the vertebral
subluxation. Collectively, these elements are known as the "subluxation complex".

1.    Kinesiopathology – the loss of normal vertebral positioning and motion in relation to neighboring

       vertebrae
2.    Myopathology – pathological changes occurring in the spinal musculature which includes

hypertonicity, spasming, fibrosis, weakness and improper or inappropriate functioning
3.    Neuropathology – irritation or injury to spinal nerve roots through compression, stretch or more
commonly chemical irritation from nearby spinal structures
4.    Histopathology – pathological changes which occur to the spinal tissues such as abnormal bony

growths off the vertebral bodies and joints, fibrosis and adhesions of spinal muscles and ligaments,

as well as dehydration and degeneration of spinal discs
5.    Pathophysiology – the biochemical changes taking place in the spinal region which include

inflammatory biochemicals from injured tissues and biochemical waste products

Each component of the subluxation must be eliminated for proper healing to occur and for the rehabilitation process to be successful. While full understanding of all components is not necessary, you should be aware of the complexity involved. Patients should also be aware that pain is but a small element of most diseases and disorders. Pain is a very poor indicator of your need for further treatment as pain generally subsides well before tissue healing and mechanical normalization has completed.

What Causes Subluxations?

Vertebral subluxations have a great number of different causes all of which the average individual
is exposed to daily. These causes can be described in terms of physical, chemical, and emotional causes.

Physical causes include acute trauma to the body, repetitive motions affecting the spine, bad postural
habits, improper workstation habits and design, and weak or imbalanced spinal musculature.

Chemical causes include poor dietary and nutritional practices, drug and alcohol use and abuse, and the ingestion of chemical toxins in the foods we eat, air we breathe, and water we drink. Chemicals which are harmful to the body decrease the body's ability to function optimally and reduce the ability to
successfully adapt to and withstand internal and external stresses - making us more susceptible to
spinal subluxations and the consequences of these subluxations.

Emotional causes refer to stress. Excessive stress or inadequate stress management skills can deplete the body of the ability to sustain normal functions. The impact of emotional stress on physical health is well documented in the medical research and can have devastating effects on the immune system, making the body susceptible to injury and disease.

Laughing Out Loud To Good Health!

Not Feeling So Well Today? A Good Laugh Just Might Help.

There is strong evidence that laughter can actually improve health and help fight disease.

Over the past few decades, doctors and other researchers have found evidence that laughter and humor are often effective in assisting pain management and promoting healing. Laughter seems to be a factor in increased ability to withstand pain. Children watching funny videos while undergoing painful medical procedures needed less pain medication during and after the procedures.

We've long known that the ability to laugh is helpful to those coping with major illness and the stress of life's problems. But researchers are now saying laughter can do a lot more -- it can basically bring balance to all the components of the immune system, which helps us fight off diseases.

Laughter provides a safety valve that shuts off the flow of stress hormones and the fight-or-flight compounds that swing into action in our bodies when we experience stress, anger or hostility. These stress hormones suppress the immune system, increase the number of blood platelets (which can cause obstructions in arteries) and raise blood pressure. When we're laughing, natural killer cells that destroy tumors and viruses increase, as do Gamma-interferon (a disease-fighting protein), T-cells, which are a major part of the immune response, and B-cells, which make disease-destroying antibodies.

What may surprise you even more is the fact that researchers estimate that laughing 100 times is equal to 10 minutes on the rowing machine or 15 minutes on an exercise bike. Laughing can be a total body workout! Blood pressure is lowered, and there is an increase in vascular blood flow and in oxygenation of the blood, which further assists healing. Laughter also gives your diaphragm and abdominal, respiratory, facial, leg and back muscles a workout. That's why you often feel exhausted after a long bout of laughter -- you've just had an aerobic workout!

The psychological benefits of humor are quite amazing, according to doctors and nurses who are members of the American Association for Therapeutic Humor. People often store negative emotions, such as anger, sadness and fear, rather than expressing them. Laughter provides a way for these emotions to be harmlessly released. Laughter is cathartic. That's why some people who are upset or stressed out go to a funny movie or a comedy club, so they can laugh the negative emotions away (these negative emotions, when held inside, can cause biochemical changes that can affect our bodies).

The Research

  • Laughing has been shown to help relax tense muscles.
  • Laughter reduces the production of stress hormones.
  • Laughter and a positive attitude strengthen the immune system.
  • Laughter allows a person to 'forget' about aches and pains and perceive pain as less intense.
  • A good laugh is like an aerobic workout for the heart and lungs--increasing the body's ability to use oxygen.
  • Laughter helps lower high blood pressure.
  • There are no known negative side effects to laughter.

Here are some tips to help you put more laughter in your life:

  • Figure out what makes you laugh and do it (or read it or watch it) more often.
  • Surround yourself with funny people -- be with them every chance you get.
  • Develop your own sense of humor. Maybe even take a class to learn how to be a better comic -- or at least a better joke-teller at that next party. Be funny every chance you get -- as long as it's not at someone else's expense!
