Do You Have A Cold Or The Flu?

Colds and the flu are distinct and upper respiratory infections, triggered by different viruses.  The flu is more serious because it can spread to the lungs, and cause severe bronchitis or pneumonia.  In times past we believed that these viruses entered the body through the nose, mouth, or eyes, while this is possible it is more likely that they enter through the ears.

A COLD PROFILE

·         Slow onset.

·         No prostration.

·         Rarely accompanied by fever or headache.

·         Localized symptoms such as hoarseness, listlessness, runny nose and sneezing.

·         Mild to moderate chest discomfort, usually with a hacking cough.

·         Mild fatigue and weakness as a result of body cleansing.

·         Sore throat is common.

A FLU PROFILE

·         Swift and sever onset.

·         General symptoms of chills, depression, and body aches.

·         Extreme fatigue, sometimes lasting 2-3 weeks.

·         Acute chest discomfort, with severe hacking cough.

·         Sore throat occasionally.

So what do we do? You will need to keep on hand several natural cold and flu remedies.

·         Star Walker Beta Glucans to help your immune system.

·         Starr Walker Vitamin C Plus.

·         Starr Walker Silver.

·         Hydrogen peroxide to use in your ears.

·         A cool mist humidifier.

Make sure to drink plenty of water, and get plenty of rest.  If you need extra help, give me a call during my “Natural Health Today” radio program (weekdays, 7:30-9:00 a.m. on KTLR AM and 12:30 – 1:00 p.m. on KTLR AM) (405) 616-5509.

The Spine & The Nervous System

I would like to take a moment and introduce myself, my name is Kamla Knight. I was born on a tiny island called Mauritius in the Indian Ocean.  I lived in Europe and then my journey took me to the US thirteen years ago.  I am happily married to a wonderful husband and have 3 beautiful children ages, 8, 4 and 2.  I attended Brigham Young University for my undergraduate degree in Microbiology, Environmental Health and Occupational Health.  I attended Parker College of Chiropractic in Dallas, TX.  I have been practicing chiropractic for years now and I love it.  I feel very strongly that it is one of my callings in life that God has bestowed upon me.  I have been trained in Applied Kinesiology which I incorporate in my daily practice.

Today the topic we are going to brush slightly on – is The Spine and The Nervous System

Understanding the Spine is the key to understanding why chiropractic doctors do what they do and why they obtain extraordinary results with a variety of different conditions. The spine is a complex structure containing a number of associated muscles, ligaments, joints and nerves which commonly become irritated and injured.  Extended sitting, repetitive motions, bad postural habits, mental stress, lack of exercise and inadequate nutritional intake are just some of the everyday stresses which accumulate to produce devastating effects on the spinal components.

Many people are surprised to learn that the spine plays a key role in protecting the nervous system.  In fact, the main function of the spine column (in addition to providing movement for the torso) is to encase and protect the spinal cord and nerve roots.  Without this protection it’s unlikely that we would survive a relatively small slip and fall injury.

The NERVOUS SYSTEM is the master controller of all cells, tissues and organs.  Nerves control the heart, lungs, immune system, endocrine system, as well as our thoughts and other cognitive processes.  Effectively, the nervous system is in charge of directing and overlooking all bodily functions – Keeping us alive and healthy, fighting off diseases and infections, and healing us after we have sustained injury.  When there is irritation and interference to a nerve, messages or impulses traveling along that nerve can get scrambled.  Some signals become only slightly altered while others may completely fail to reach their destination.  As this process continues, those cells, tissues, and organs which depend on the affected nerves for communication becomes less effective in performing their many important tasks and become less able to maintain their optimal health.  Ultimately, the affected tissues can degenerate and become nonfunctional and diseased.

This model of disease helps explain why so many patients under chiropractic care have noted dramatic improvements with many seemingly “ non-spinal” conditions such as dizziness, ulcers, ear infections, asthma, menstrual pains and low energy levels, to name a few.  While it’s not prudent to claim chiropractic treatments may eliminate or treat such conditions, many patients have experienced phenomenal relief.

Chiropractors are the only doctors trained to detect and treat vertebral misalignments and fixations as well as many other common spinal abnormalities which cause nerve irritation and interference.  Correcting nerve irritation and interference allow the body to function the way it was meant to.

Payment Plan for Dentistry

The one thing that people don’t know about dentistry is that it can be affordable for most people.  Dr. Bass’ office offers several payment options that include interest free plans or longer-term options for the patients who want a low monthly payment.  Dr. Bass had a patient that was so excited that she could get a beautiful new smile with a low monthly payment, because in the past that was never an option.  Patients would feel like there was no hope for to afford a beautiful healthy smile.

Recently a patient came into Dr. Bass’ office concerned about having mercury fillings in her mouth, and wanted them removed.  Unfortunately, her dental insurance would not help her with all of the cost of removing the mercury.  She was afraid that it would not be possible financially for her to get the dentistry she wanted and needed.  Dr. Bass’ office was able to find a payment plan that fit into her budget.  She was very excited that we could help her not only with her dental needs, but with her financial needs as well.  If you have any questions, you may contact Dr. Bass’ office at 405-848-7780.!

Do You Have Enough HCL?

In addition to the enzymes, your stomach also makes hydrochloric acid or HCL.  American’s start to have deficiencies of HCL at an average 35 to 45.  This condition is known as hypochlorhydria, and effects over half the people age 50.  Lack of HCL leads to many problems such as : constipation, flatulence, and cramps.  If you were a bottle fed baby, you lose HCL sooner than breast fed babies.

Here are a few symptoms of a lack of HCL

  • Bad breath
  • Feeling full after a normal meal
  • Constipation
  • Belching or nausea
  • Weak, cracked fingernails
  • Skin problems such as excima
  • Cramping
  • Passage of undigested food
  • Coated tongue
  • Chronic yeast infections

Here are a few ways that HCL helps your body.

  • Improves digestion and assimilation
  • Fights germs and bacteria
  • Normalizes your urine

Our stomach begins the process of digesting food with both digestive enzymes and HCL. As we age, our bodies produce less and less HCL.  Without this beneficial acid, food stays in the stomach too long.  Eventually, the food begins to ferment, producing dangerous, toxic acid.  When people complain of an acid stomach, this is the acid that they are feeling, not the good HCL that we were born with.

So, what do we do?  First of all make sure that you are getting plenty of enzymes.  Any meal that is not at least 50% raw foods, use Starr Walker Life from Life Enzymes.  This is the first and most important step in protecting you digestion!  Next, stop using anti-acids.  This will improve your body’s ability to make that all important HCL.  To test your HCL, take 1 HCL Betaine and one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar.  If symptoms worsen, this signals the likelihood of an ulcer.  To neutralize the HCL Betaine, dissolve ¼ to ½ tsp. baking soda in an 8oz. cup of water and drink.

Kegel Exercises

Alternate Names: Pelvic Floor Exercises (PFEs), Pelvic Muscle Strengthening Exercises

Definition:  Kegel exercises are a series of pelvic muscle exercises designed to strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor.

Description: Kegel exercises were originally developed by Dr. Arnold Kegel in 1948 as a method of controlling incontinence in women following childbirth.  Although his purpose was to help patients get better bladder control, there are many other significant benefits.  Kegel spent 20 years researching the benefits of what has come to be called the Kegel Exercise, which strengthens the pubbococcy geal – the PC muscle – that controls the pelvic area.  These exercises are now recommended for anyone with pelvic floor instability.

The principal behind Kegel exercise is to strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, thereby improving pelvic stability.  The success of Kegel exercises depends on proper technique and adherence to a regular exercise program.

Some people have difficulty identifying and isolating the muscles of the pelvic floor.  Care must be taken to learn to contract the correct muscles.  Typically, most people contract the abdominal or thigh muscles, while not even working the pelvic floor muscles.  These incorrect contractions may even worsen pelvic floor tone.  Several techniques exist to help identify the correct muscles.

One approach is to stop the flow of urine midstream by contracting your pelvic floor muscles.  Repeat this action several times until you become familiar with the feel of contracting the correct group of muscles.  Another approach is to contract and hole the contraction of the pelvic floor muscles every time you are stopped at a stoplight.  You should easily be able to repeat this exercise for 5-10 repetitions at every stoplight.  You should perform these contractions at least 30 times a day, and up to 200 repetitions a day.  Refrain from contracting your abdominal, thigh, or buttocks muscles while performing the exercise.

Kegeling provides many benefits:

·         Improves pelvic stability, and decreased low back pain.

·         It can prevent prolapses of pelvic organs

·         It can help prevent leaking urine when you sneeze or cough

·         Conditioned muscles will make birth easier, and your perineum will more likely be intact

·         (fewer tears and episiotomies)

·         Sexual enjoyment is enhanced for both partners

Xylitol, Best News Since Flouride

Good dental hygiene and regular dental care can help prevent cavities.  But our definition of what makes for good dental hygiene is changing.  Should the definition be expanded to include Xylitol  -based toothpaste and chewing gum?  Absolutely, say many of American’s leading dental health experts.

No matter how conscientious we are as parents, the truth is children love sweets.  Of course, candy and junk food seem to find their way to them no matter how hard we try to keep them apart.  And consuming sweets leads to cavities, technically called dental caries, which are caused by a bacterium called Streptococcus mutans.  This bacterium lives in the mouth and thrives on sugar and other carbohydrates. S. mutans produces acids that dissolve the enamel, causing cavities.

Double-blind studies enrolling almost 4,000 people, mostly children, have found that the natural sugar xylitol can prevent cavities. These trials using xylitol – sweetened gum, candies, or toothpaste have repeatedly shown reductions in tooth decay by up to 80 percent in people who consistently use products sweetened with 100 percent xylitol.   It’s great news for cavity-prone children and adults.

Starr Walker offers Safe-n-Sweet (Pure Xylitol) which can be rubbed directly on to teeth after brushing.  It is in a powder form so it can be used to sweeten drinks or even cook with.  A 16 oz. bottle is $10.65.

Food Allergies and other Gastrointestinal Problems

Do you have irritable bowel syndrome, gas, bloating, soft stools, frequent stomach acid or frequent heartburn?  These indicate GI problems which may be a significant factor in chronic fatigue.  Chronic fatigue can affect the muscles of the GI tract which can in turn cause the sort of problems I just described.  These can in turn cause additional fatigue.

There are several things you can do to help both your GI problems and your fatigue.  There are nutritionals you should be taking and foods you should avoid.

Helicobacter Pylori:    For many years doctors told us that stomach ulcers were caused by stress.  We now know that they are caused by the helicobacter pylori bacteria.  This was discovered by Dr. Barry Marshall of Australia.  The medical community at first refused to believe him.  He had to intentionally infect himself with the bacteria to prove this.

H. pylori can cause both fatigue and stomach discomfort and Dr. Marshall recommends treating it in cases of CFS.  Any gastroenterologist can test you for it.  Blood tests are known to have error rates of up to 20%.  A non-invasive way of screening for the H. pylori bacteria is with the Meridian Stress Assessment System or Electrical Dermal Screening.

Bacterial Infections of the Small and Large Intestines:  Other bacterial infections can cause both stomach discomfort and fatigue.  Some antibiotics like penicillin and its relatives may take care of certain GI problems, but can make others worse.  The use of homeopathics and nutritional can bring your system back in balance without side-affects, you only get side-benefits.

Aspartame (NutraSweet): In my case, eliminating this is a huge factor. Go to Dorway.com for more information on Aspartame.

Food Allergies and Sensitivities:  Candida and helicobacter pylori can each cause food sensitivities, inflame the colon or stomach leading to even more Candida and helicobacter pylori!

Food sensitivities often cause stomach discomfort and fatigue. Wheat and dairy are easily the two most common food sensitivities and should be avoided.  Studies have linked wheat and dairy sensitivities to skin rashes and asthma.

Let me explain why food sensitivities may be almost impossible to track down on your own.  Food sensitivities can cause a variety of different symptoms and they may cause them hours after consuming the food.  Food sensitivities can cause obvious symptoms such as stomach discomfort, gas, or diarrhea, but can also cause other problems such as fatigue, pressure in the head, migraine, skin rashes, and even blisters.

A food may not cause a problem when you eat only a small amount of it or eat it every few days.  It may cause a problem only when you eat that food several days in a row.  Just because you eat a food once and do not have a reaction that day, doesn’t mean it is safe.  You may have a reaction if you keep eating it for several days.  Some foods you have sensitivities to may be safe to eat every fourth day.  Others may not be safe to eat at all.  This means that some foods will cause reactions only hours after you have eaten them for the second time in two or three days.  You can certainly see how this would make it difficult to determine food sensitivity on your own!

People with food sensitivities  often have more than one.  This can also make it very difficult to isolate what you are allergic to.  You might discontinue one food, but if you are still eating another that causes the same symptoms, you would probably think the first food is safe.

Testing for Food Sensitivities:  The typical allergist uses food allergy test that are at best primitive.  Most are still using skin prick and intradermal tests.  In my opinion the best type screening for food sensitivities are the Meridian Stress Assessment System.  Most allergists and main stream doctors still call these “experimental” and won’t use the.  This is astounding considering that most will admit that the skin prick tests are not very good.  After 20 years of use you would think that they would have done the necessary studies to prove or disprove blood tests. They haven’t done so for a simple reason. The blood tests are so easy that any doctor could order it and it would put allergists out of business!

Summary:  Gastrointestinal problems are often the result of helicobacter pylori, mycoplasmas, Candida, and food sensitivities.  All of these maladies can be screened by the MSAS.  The tests for food sensitivities offered by most allergists are not very good.  In my opinion the best screening is the Meridian Stress Assessment System.  Wheat and dairy are the most common allergies.  It is best to avoid these.  Please contact the Full Circle Health Clinic to set and appointment.  Today truly is the first day of the rest of your healthy life.
