THE DANGERS OF DISTILLED WATER
By: Dr. Mary Schrick, (N.D., Ph.D.)
Many health conscious people are often surprised that drinking distilled water on a regular, daily basis is dangerous. We’ve known for sometime that this is not a policy from the works of Paavo Airola. He wrote about the dangers of distilled water in the 1970’s when it had become quite a fad.
Distillation is the process in which water is boiled, evaporated and then the vapor is condensed. Distilled water is free of dissolved minerals and, because of this, has the special property of being able to actively absorb toxic substances from the body and eliminate them.
Studies validate the benefits of drinking distilled water when one is seeking to cleanse or detoxify the system for short periods of time but this should only be done under the advice and supervision of a health care practitioner.
Fasting using distilled water can be dangerous because of the rapid loss of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride) and trace minerals like magnesium, deficiencies of which can cause heart beat irregularities and high blood pressure. Cooking foods in distilled water pulls the minerals out of them and lowers their nutrient value. You would actually be better off to drink the water they were cooked in and discard the foods.
Distilled water is an active absorber and when it comes into contact with air, it absorbs carbon dioxide, making it acidic. The more distilled water a person drinks, the higher the body acidity becomes. If you have listened to any of my shows, you will know how detrimental being acid is to your overall health.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, “Distilled water, being essentially mineral-free, is very aggressive, in that it tends to dissolve substances with which it is in contact. Notably, carbon dioxide from the air is rapidly absorbed, making the water acidic and even more aggressive. Many metals are dissolved by distilled water.” This of course would apply to minerals found in your body.
The most toxic commercial beverages that people consume are made from distilled water. At the top of the list, you will find sodas. Studies have consistently shown that heavy consumers of soft drinks (with or without sugar) spill huge amounts of calcium, magnesium and other trace minerals into the urine.
The more mineral loss, the greater the risk for osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, hypothyroidism, coronary artery disease, high blood pressure and a long list of degenerative diseases generally associated with premature aging.
A growing number of health care practitioners and scientists from around the world have been advocating the theory that aging and disease is the direct result of the accumulation of acid waste products in the body. I agree with them. We need to concentrate on removing these toxins, not adding to the toxic overload on our bodies.
There is a great deal of scientific documentation that supports such a theory. It goes without saying that a poor diet may be partially to blame for the waste accumulation and the acidic condition of the body. In fact, let’s look at that for just a moment. I’ll list the foods that cause the body to become acidic.
Meats
Sugar
Alcohol
Fried foods
Soft drinks
Processed foods
White flour products
Dairy products
Stress, whether mental or physical, can also lead to acid deposits in the body.
Remember, the longer one drinks distilled water, the more likely they will develop a mineral deficiency as well as an acid state. Also keep in mind that, particularly in the summer months, we lose more than just water as we sweat. You will be losing your electrolytes and this, of course, is not a healthy thing to do. To prevent this from happening, be sure to include in your water the Starr Walker Mineral Perfect. This is a very outstanding product, and is highly absorbable. Live long, live strong, the Starr Walker way, and you can start today.
KEEPING OUR BODIES STRONG
IN THE MIDST OF THE STORM
By: Dr. Mary Schrick & Robyn K. Cowherd
This newsletter is about to go into the final phase of production and we don’t like to give material to our webmaster at the last minute. However, world events are changing so rapidly that we felt a sense of urgency and a sense of responsibility to our public to communicate some of our concerns.
There have been many news reports in the past week regarding potential nuclear attacks on the United States. We are not going to delve into the sources for this information because that is not the purpose of this article. However, those who wish to pursue this can go to the internet. Newsmax.com is one source to look at, as well as worldnetdaily.com and stevequayle.com. (We are not saying we endorse everything at these sites.) Simply typing into a search engine a few key words will also bring you many sources.
Whether or not this happens in the near or distant future, or whether it happens at all, it is our responsibility as your partners in health to address the issue from at least a health perspective. Do we know that this is coming? We know what the commentators and analysts are saying – that it is not a matter of if, but a matter of when. Those of us who are in positions of leadership become responsible to inform you. Those who are the recipients of the information can then decide what to do.
From the reports that we listened to last night (7-20-05), as well as reports from last week, it is apparent that when these events occur, many people will survive. It is absolutely critical that we be as prepared as possible. There are many ways to be prepared. The purpose of this article is to alert you to just a couple of things regarding physical preparedness.
We have been emphasizing a strong immune system for several years. We ask you again; in fact, we implore you, to work on your immune system from every angle. Make wise food choices. Eat the things that are good for you even if you don’t like them. Eat them knowing that they will heal and strengthen you. Eat them knowing that they were placed here on planet earth for our food – green, living plants and fresh fruits. Supplement with heavier foods like whole grains and occasional meats, if you are so inclined. If you are very toxic and have a cleansing reaction or two (headaches, symptoms of a cold or flu, etc.), thank God that your body is removing those things that are keeping you from living in health. Don’t forget to mix in some exercise.
For several years we have carried Potassium Iodate. This is the main reason for this article. Potassium Iodate is to be used only in the case of a radioactive disaster – nuclear fallout. The thyroid gland is very susceptible to radiation. If Potassium Iodate is taken immediately after exposure, it goes straight to the thyroid gland and loads it with iodine which, in turn, protects the gland from the radiation. Nuclear radiation goes straight to the thyroid gland, subsequently causing cancer. During a nuclear disaster, such as war, terrorism, a nuclear meltdown or radioactive spill, great amounts of radioactive iodine (I-131) are often released into the atmosphere. Taking Potassium Iodide (or Potassium Iodate) pills can protect against radioactive poisoning by "filling" the thyroid with this harmless substance for a period of time; long enough to allow the dangerous radioactive iodine to be "blocked" (not be absorbed), and then naturally dissipate from the area. Up to 99% of all radiation-induced thyroid damage can be prevented by taking Potassium Iodide pills.
Potassium Iodate is a superior form of Potassium Iodide (KI) because of its extended shelf life and lack of bitter taste. The extra molecule of oxygen in Potassium Iodate (KIO3), can guarantee the Iodate's continued freshness without adding stabilizers. The Potassium Iodate we offer is an 85mg tablet, 200 tablets to a bottle. It should be kept sealed, dry, and out of reach of children. If unopened, it should be effective for decades. Use during a NUCLEAR EMERGENCY ONLY.
BEFORE YOU TAKE POTASSIUM
IODATE (or any Thyroid Blocker):
Are you sensitive to iodine?
IF YOU ANSWERED YES TO ANY OF THESE QUESTIONS, TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE TAKING ANY THYROID BLOCKER--KI (POTASSIUM IODIDE) OR KIO3 (POTASSIUM IODATE)
The above contraindications to taking Potassium Iodate are another signal to take care of your overall health. If you are having physical problems that can be improved by altering your diet and taking healthful supplements, we implore you to take control. Some of the above problems are things that you can circumvent. However, we are not suggesting that you ignore the advice of your physician. Just be wise in your decisions and do whatever you can to be prepared to protect yourself and your family in the event of an emergency. We also suggest another website, ki4u.com. This website has a great deal of information about Potassium Iodate that you might want to print off and keep.
It is also important that you know that in the past when there have been rumblings of a nuclear attack of some kind, Potassium Iodate has become scarce and difficult for us to purchase. You would be well-advised to come and get a bottle for each member of your family while we have some in stock. If you are inclined to stock a few items for an emergency situation, you might consider any of our prepackaged food products such as Red, Green & Fiber Power, Chocolate or Vanilla Meal Rice, and Complete Meal Supplement. These products will keep for years in their containers.
This article is not meant to frighten you, it is intended to alert you.
INTRODUCING...
By: Robyn K. Cowherd
We are so excited to be able to introduce to you a woman of eminent qualifications in the area of colon hydrotherapy. After taking on the full-time position with Starr Walker as the Coordinator of Marketing, I (Robyn) felt that to be most effective, I should not be the main colon hydrotherapist. So, I began the process of looking for someone to help us with colonics. Well, about the time I decided to do fewer colonics, people who wanted to have a colonic began “coming out of the woodwork,” and I became busier than ever! In retrospect, I now see what a good thing that has been because it tells us that there are, indeed, people who want colonics and the word is getting out about how effective they are. This demand helped us to know that we do want to continue to offer this service and then...
Along came Pat! Pat called me “out of the blue;” but not really, because I had been deeply considering what should be done about this matter. I did not feel that I could simply stop doing the colonics without having someone in place as another colon hydrotherapist. I was also very concerned to find just the right person so that you (our clients) would be comfortable. Wow! Pat is incredible. When she phoned me, she had just moved to Oklahoma and had only been here for 9 weeks. She wondered if we might need someone in the area of colon hydrotherapy! Little did she know how I had been diligently seeking an answer. After I met Pat (last Sunday, 7-24-05), I immediately called Mary and said, “Unless I am a complete misjudge of character, we have a potential diamond!”
Pat came to the Clinic yesterday (7-27-05) and worked with me all afternoon. Our team of people fell in love with her. She brought us healing food – raw, fermented ‘kraut – and we talked at length about good food, cleansing, and healing. Pat has the credentials and the passion to take all of us to another level of health and wholeness! Her enthusiasm and knowledge are contagious.
So, what kind of colon hydrotherapist is she? When I called the Clinic where she practiced in Atlanta, Georgia, I was told that clients are still, after many months, calling their clinic for Pat’s cell phone number. The clients then take out a map to see how far it would be to travel to get a colonic from Pat Perry! The lady told me that Pat’s schedule was always filled and people waited to get in to see her. This was in a clinic where there are several colon hydrotherapists – not just Pat! We talked at length and all of the reports about Pat were glowing. We are very blessed and I can recommend her to you with complete confidence.
The following is a summary of some of Pat’s qualifications. We look forward to learning a great deal from her and utilizing her skills. Please help me welcome her. If you have been hesitant to schedule a colonic, hesitate no more!
PAT, WHO?
Pat Perry, an avid student of health and wellness for more than thirty years, is highly intuitive with regard to serving her clients.
In addition to her I-ACT (International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy) certifications at the Advanced Level and National Board certification, she holds triple-certification in massage therapy (Swedish, Integrated Restoration Systems/Clinical Sports Massage, and Neuromuscular Therapy) from the Academy of Somatic Healing Arts (ASHA) in Atlanta, GA.
Her clients quickly attest that Pat keeps her passion for health and wellness ablaze by encouraging and enlightening them; drawing from her own personal experience, and by continuing to be influenced by the timeless contributions of some of her most favorite experts from Dr. Jethro Kloss, Dr. J. H. Kellogg, Dr. Paul C. Bragg and Dr. Norman W. Walker; to more recently, Ms. Ann Wigmore, Dr. Stephen Tates and Ms. Donna Gates, to name just a few. Pat credits her mother, by the loving example she set, having nursed her from a sickly child, with making the single most influential contribution to her health consciousness as an adult.
Pat is delighted and excited to be a new resident to the great State of Oklahoma and looks forward to contributing to improved health and well-being of our clients.
Welcome aboard, Pat Perry!
IDEAS FOR WAYS TO TAKE FIBER POWER
By: Robyn K. Cowherd
It is important to be very careful about the use of milk; especially if you are troubled with various digestive problems. Most adults are lactose intolerant to some degree or another. Milk can create a great deal of mucus, gas, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation. We do not need the milk of another species in order to be healthy. Do not take the Fiber Power in cow’s milk.
When you first begin to use Fiber Power, use about 1 teaspoon a day for a few days to see how well you tolerate the ingredients. Gradually increase the amount to the recommended serving size. Remember that Fiber Power is good food. It is not at all like taking an over-the-counter laxative. Laxatives can be very detrimental to the health of the colon.
Fiber Power can be taken in apple juice or grape juice.
To 8-12 ounces of Rice Dream, or another form of grain or nut milk, add the recommended serving of Fiber Power. Add a small amount of maple syrup or xylitol. Mix in the blender. Let it set for a few minutes. Add ice. Blend again and drink. This makes a good bedtime snack, if you are hungry before retiring. The pineapple enzymes (bromelain) in the Fiber Power are helpful for those who suffer from digestive problems and may soothe the digestive tract before going to bed.
If you do not achieve the desired results, you might need more fiber in your diet. Consider taking the Fiber Power in the morning as well as in the evening. Add the Fiber Power to a morning smoothie.
EPA/DHA Facts
By: Dr. Kamla Knight
In August we have world breastfeeding week. I want to give you some EPA/DHA facts as they specifically relate to breastfeeding. First of all, I applaud all the women out there who are trying to breastfeed their children. It is the very best thing you can do for your child, but good nutrition for you is also very critical during that time period.
When breastfeeding, do you ever feel like your brain is cloudy or that you forget very easily? If you do, then you are lacking the essential fatty acids in your diet found in fish oil. DHA is important for not only the mother's brain but also for the child's brain/neural development, learning ability, visual acuity and preservation of brain function. Breast milk naturally provides adequate DHA for the developing child.
Breastfed infants have higher DHA levels in their cortex than do formula-fed infants and the DHA contents of the infant's brain triples during the first three months of life. If the mother is deficient though, then breast milk will be deficient also. It is advantageous to begin DHA from fish oil throughout pregnancy. Diets rich in DHA during pregnancy and lactation may also increase the IQ of the children. If you think you are lacking EPA/DHA in your diet, pick up our own Starr Walker EPA/DHA blend plus.
Fluoride Study Produces Too Many Dead Rats
USEPA MINIMIZES 80% DEATH
RATE
IN EXPERIMENTAL LAB RATS.
George Glasser
Submitted by Dean Tipton, General Ionics, 330-6034
"In l999, EPA convened a group of experts to carefully consider the results of the Varner et al. (1998) study," USEPA spokesman, Charles Fox wrote in a September 5, 2000 letter to US Congressman Ken Calvert, Chairman, House Subcommittee on Energy and the Environment. Fox continued, "As a result of that conference, EPA has requested that the National Toxicology Program consider the possibility of conducting additional studies of the neurotoxicity of aluminum that include verification of the results observed in the Varner et al. Study."
Fox carefully avoided mentioning the fact that the reviewed study he cited was replicated in two previous studies by Dr. Julie Varner. All three studies found that aluminum-fluoride interactions are associated with brain and kidney damage in laboratory animals. Aside from brain and kidney damage, there was an 80% mortality rate in the animals fed doses of sodium fluoride and aluminum similar to those found in artificially fluoridated drinking water.
Alum (aluminum sulfate) is most frequently used by water companies to improve the appearance of drinking water, to make it clear. For many years, aluminum has been known to be neurotoxic to humans and animals.
The original Varner, et al, study published in Neuroprotective Agents, 1997, was designed to determine whether aluminum and fluoride (aluminum fluoride) in drinking water play a role in age-related neurological damage similar to Alzheimer’s disease. It was the first scientific study to deal with fluoride/aluminum interaction.
The researchers considered that fluoride and aluminum could combine in the stomach and be more readily transported to the brain. The combination, they believed, could enhance neurological damage and cause conditions such as presenile dementia or Alzheimer’s like dementia (ALD). During the first experiment, the researchers had noted, and were perplexed by, the alarmingly high death rate in the group of animals receiving aluminum and fluoride in their drinking water (80% of the animals in the low-dose group died before completion of the experiment).
They also noted that the amounts of aluminum and fluoride fed to the animals were about the same as the amounts people are exposed to in artificially fluoridated public water supplies. The reason for the high number of animal deaths is still unexplained as was the fact that the greatest number of mental impairments appeared in the low-dose group of animals.
It was also observed that the animals who drank the aluminum/fluoride-laced water developed sparse hair and abnormal, copper-colored underlying skin which is related to premature aging. Researchers said that most often this condition is the result of several diseases including chronic kidney failure. Further autopsy results showed serious kidney abnormalities in animals that drank water containing both sodium fluoride and aluminum fluoride.
The Varner team said that, "Striking parallels were seen between aluminum-induced alterations" in cerebral blood vessels that are associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of presenile dementia. They concluded that the alterations of the blood vessels may be a primary event triggering neuro-degenerative diseases.
Astounded, the researchers went on to say: "Not only did the rats in the lowest dose groups die more often during the experiment, they looked poorly well before their deaths. Even the rats in the lowest dose group that managed to survive the 45 weeks looked to be in poor health."
Subsequently, the researchers reported that the results of the "THIRD" animal study confirmed the findings of the previous studies. This red flag alarmed the USEPA panel of experts because the same physical and neurological damage can also be occurring in humans in areas where both aluminum sulfate and fluorides are added to the public drinking water.
Based on the conclusions drawn from the third Varner study, the USEPA experts requested further research be commissioned by the National Toxicology Program. In spite of the disturbing Varner team revelations, it will take two to three years for the National Toxicology to review the request.
Almost 60% of the United States is fluoridated, and the odds of an American developing some form of dementia by the age of 65 is estimated at 1 in every 10 people, and at the age of 85, the odds are 3 in every 10 people.
In the United Kingdom, which is 10% fluoridated, 7% of the population over 65 years will develop some form of dementia.
Recent USEPA concerns over arsenic, a Group 1 (a) carcinogen, caused the government-contracted water treatment chemical certification laboratory, National Sanitation Foundation International, to say that there will be "increased product failures" due to high arsenic levels in fluorosilicic acid. USEPA has asked the US Government to dramatically reduce arsenic levels in drinking water from 50 parts per billion to 5 parts per billion. The EPA is keen to change the regulations because arsenic is known to cause a wide range of cancers in humans.
More recently, the primary component of fluorosilicic acid and sodium fluorosilicate - silicon - has also been discovered in the brain plaque of Alzheimer’s and Alzheimer’s-like dementia (ALD) victims. Silica has also been found in the brain tissue of people with primary brain tumors, which is considered a terminal condition. Although aware of these new developments, no responsible government agency including the USEPA will request that any research be done with the actual toxic waste "product" used to fluoridate public drinking water.
BREASTFEEDING AWARENESS “WEEK”
May 1 – September 30, 2005
Welcoming Your New Baby
By: Robyn K. Cowherd
My young friends welcomed their new baby just over a week ago. I saw him and held him for the first time this weekend. What a thrill – and what a beauty! As older mothers we admonish those who are younger to cherish these moments and years because they will be gone all too soon. The first few weeks of welcoming a baby into the family, and then adjusting to the added variables, can be a trying experience physically and emotionally; but it is certainly one of life’s most rewarding times. What many people do not realize is that this period of adjustment is not the barometer of the entire breastfeeding experience. Most first-time parents are not aware that this is a period of adjustment.
Successful breastfeeding hinges first and foremost on commitment. This goes beyond simply wanting to breastfeed. This means making it happen regardless of circumstances that could prevent it. It is important for the mother to have the complete support of her husband. He can then be the interface between mom, baby and any outside negative pressure. This is one of dad’s most important roles to play at this time. Some think that it is important for dad to be able to feed the baby. There are many other important things for him to do. In addition to being the one to run interference, he can bathe, change, rock and cuddle baby. These will all help mom to get much-needed rest.
During the first couple of weeks it is a good idea for baby not to receive any synthetic nipples because of the possibility of nipple confusion. This does not mean that the baby can never be fed breast milk from a bottle. However, during the crucial time of bonding and learning how to nurse, there is a very high potential for nipple confusion and subsequent difficulty in nursing. Keep the baby at the breast.
It is also important to know that during the first six weeks there are two times of growth spurts – two weeks and six weeks. Just before a growth spurt, a breastfed infant will increase the milk supply by nursing longer and more frequently. Do not be alarmed that the mother does not have enough milk at these times. Breastfeeding is a supply and demand system. It won’t be there if there is not enough stimulation to tell the body to produce more.
Babies nurse for more reasons than food. After being in a protected environment for 9 months, being outside the womb is very stimulating. Babies cry as a way of expressing their sensitivity to this over stimulation. Breastfed babies can certainly be nursed when they need to be soothed. Breastfeeding is a form of comfort as well as a form of food.
Prolactin, the “mothering” hormone, is secreted when nursing. This hormone causes the mother to desire her baby – to protect and care for it. It also relaxes the mother which is most helpful during the stressful times of parenting young children.
If there are older children in the family, reserving a basket of special toys and books to be played with only when mom is nursing baby is a good idea. This will help to keep the older child occupied and perhaps diffuse some attention-getting behaviors that can come along with a new baby. When dad is around, this is another thing that he can do to help mom. Dad can use nursing time to interact with older children.
Even though the stress of a new baby is a good stressor, it is still stress. Mom should take a nap with baby whenever she needs to do so. Fatigue is a common cause of a gloomy outlook. Being well-rested certainly takes precedence over a perfectly clean house. A great tip I learned in La Leche League is to ask your husband, “If I can only do one thing for you today, what would you like that one thing to be?” Maybe all he needs is a pathway cleared to mother and baby.
The main thing is to focus on the needs of your family. It is a time to bond together in new ways and to grow as individuals and as a unit. The La Leche League organization is a wonderful resource and support for families who want to give their babies the best. Find a meeting near you and look them up on the ‘net – lalecheleague.org. You will find many wonderful parenting tips, as well as breastfeeding tips.
