Support for the Body's Natural Sleep Cycle
Melatonin is the only hormone known to be secreted by the pineal gland. The pineal gland suppresses melatonin release when exposed to sunlight and the human body remains awake. As dusk falls and exposure to sunlight decreases the melatonin levels begin to rise, finally peeking at around 11 PM for most individuals. This escalated availability of melatonin is what brings on drowsiness and sleep.
For many, however, it is not uncommon to experience drowsiness in the early afternoon. This is especially true of those who work indoors out of the path of direct sunlight. Poor lighting and inconsistent light cause the pineal gland to trigger off and on.
